United States v. Wong Kim Ark

I came across this Supreme Court decision when researching the Chinese Exclusion Act for my latest blog post: American Values Come to San Francisco. As it turns out, this case set a fairly important legal precedent with regards to citizenship of individuals born to foreign nationals.

Five Guys

Five Guys is the In and Out Burger joint of the east coast. My friend Aileen introduced it to me last year when I was visiting her in Charlottesville. Easily one of the best burger places I've been to... perhaps better than In & Out. Will have to check it out again when I'm in DC again!

Rescue 911

It's funny how sometimes when you think you've lost a skill due to the passage of time, it comes rushing back to you at the moment you least expect. That happened to me last Saturday night. The location? Ruby Skye nightclub.

After an evening of some libations, I was walking out of the bathroom when a woman came rushing out of the bathroom asking for help because her friend had cut herself on some glass on the floor. I naturally assumed the friend was still in the women's bathroom and on a whim, I went in to the women's bathroom and started knocking on the stalls to find and to help this immobile women.... only to find out that she was already relocated on a chair outside the bathroom.

I quickly reoriented myself and found the woman, clutching her foot. She had a band-aid over the cut and became worried that it was something serious. I took charge and told the club manager to get some ice as I triaged the woman. While the cut didn't seem that serious, she was in obvious pain and I instinctively began applying the 15 on/off numbing method with the ice as we elevated her leg. Through a combination of a few people, we managed to calm the woman down and instructed her what to do afterwards in terms of cleaning and self-care.

After 10 minutes of this, I said that she could probably handle herself for the rest of the evening and excused myself. I paused for a second as I walked away, turned around, and returned to the woman to give my business card, telling her to contact me if she has any questions or concerns afterwards.

Yes, it was an evening of returning back to one's natural instincts and habits. How some things just seem to make sense after you have a few drinks.

Who Do You Got?

Ever since he became my roommate, Rohit has been raving... no wait. SINGING THE PRAISES for this little authentic Mexican restaurant called Del Taco. But not just any Del Taco like the one on Market Street, conveniently located near the Powell Street exit. No. It has to be a Del Taco outside the Bay Area.

This weekend, en route to LA, we stopped in the great city of Santa Nella, about an hour away from Livermore, to eat at Del Taco. In order to defend my masculinity, I was prompted to order to Macho Burrito and also added a fish taco, since that's the thing you do in California.

So the ultimate verdict? Well, it's okay. The burrito was pretty large. The taco was tasty. But better than Taco Bell? Not too sure about it. I'm a big Gorditas fan and there is nothing like that on the menu.

So I ask you, loyal readers... who do you got? Taco Bell or Del Taco?

WSJ Presents Open That Bottle Night

After reading an article in the venerable Wall Street Journal, 1524 SF decided to host a version of this party at our place in San Francisco. We invited a small number of fellow San Franciscans and provided classy hors d’Ĺ“uvre like tater tots and French fries. The only requirement for attendance was that guests bring a bottle of their favorite wine; needless to say, we got our dosage of resveratrol that night. Look for this tradition to continue in the years to come! Photos from the party can be found here.
