2006 Year in Review

2006 was a pretty crazy year for the house. Here's a recap of all the highlights from the year.

January:
Garett begins training for running races to the surprise of Phil and Rohit.
Overall alcohol consumption in the house begins to decrease for the first time in 1524 history.
Garett revolutionizes the entertainment system by bringing back his 8-bit Nintendo. Many Blades of Steel games result in colourful metaphors being shouted at house members.
Phil is introduced to "24," the TV series. This is easily one of the biggest life-changing moments in his life.

February:
Garett performs a concert with co-worker at a senior citizens home. Heckled by residents and not invited to return.
Garett volunteers at the Botanical Gardens and resoiled plants. Lasted one day.
Garett is recruited by a new department and accepted a job transfer at work.
Rohit moves to Salt Lake City and likes it there. Says he feels like he's with "his peeps."

March:
Phil buys a PS2 game unit to upgrade our entertainment units. His first game: 24-The Game. He later finishes the game within weeks.
Garett flies to SLC to visit Rohit and convinces him to return to SF. Alcohol consumption begins to increase again.
Garett volunteers at the SF International Film Festival. He meets Miss Chinatown and is escorted out of the festival shortly afterwards.

April:
Garett begins his frequent flier reputation with a weekend trip to Toronto. Later in the month, he flies to MA to see a Red Sox game. His rationale: "But it's a Red Sox-Yankees game!"
Rohit and Garett attends the Charter Gala. Highlights include Garett meeting his role model, Chancellor Birgeneau, for the first time, the two jumping for joy at the open bar, and much tom-foolery throughout the night.
Phil and Audrey does the impossible and watches 24: Season 4 in one sitting.

May:
Many 1524 Friends graduate college (finally), including Eva, Jason, and Christine.
Garett runs his fourth and final race in 2006 at Bay to Breakers.
Garett's past haunts him as a friend from MA comes to visit him for a week. Phase One and Phase Two of Garett's life collide.
Rohit, Jenna, Garett, and Katie go to Napa Valley. Rohit and Garett return with hats that instantly add 20 years of street cred.
Garett unintentionally is seated next to Jeri Ryan, of Star Trek: Voyager fame, at Alcatraz. For the rest of the visit, he stalks her until he is placed in a still-working jail cell.

June:
Fred becomes the new house member at 1524.
Phil and Garett volunteers for the Special Olympics softball team. Phil is cut after one practice due to his "me" attitude. Garett teaches the team how to bean players.

Garett develops a "medical condition." Many jokes are thrown at him and he eventually recovers.
Garett begins to watch "Veronica Mars."

August:
Phil makes a life changing decision and begins teaching.
Phil and Garett begin watching "The Office"
Garett flies to MA and DC for a vacation and his sister's wedding.
The house goes to watch some Red Sox/A's games and witness Garett crying over 3 consecutive losses.

September:
Fred passes away. Shots are poured out for Fred and his hommie, Tupac.
Garett becomes a recluse as he studies for the GRE
Cable is reduced in the house to limited basic. All of our brains say thanks for not killing them anymore with Project Runway.

October:
The house goes to see the documentary "I Trust You to Kill Me." Kiefer Sutherland is in attendance for the Q&A. Phil is paralyzed that Jack Bauer is 50 feet away from him. Garett asks a question and doesn't pee in his pants when Sutherlands answers him.
Rohit turns 23 and is feted at a classy French restaurant known as Les Hooters.
Phil turns 23 and celebrates with Garett's 25th with a night out with good friends
Garett dresses up as Steve Zissou for Halloween. No one realizes that he is in costume at work.
The 5 AM event occurs. Named Number #1 event for 2006.

November:
Rohit and Garett start really submitting grad school applications. Wine consumption increases.
Garett teaches a kid how to do a water sprinkler at a wedding. The kid is forever traumatized.
Phil and Garett cook a full Thanksgiving dinner. No medical injuries result.

December:
Garett breaks house key. House suspects steroid use, which Garett responds with: "I am not here to talk about my past."
Weekly dinners resume.
Phil and Garett party out for NYE at Yancy's, where everyone knows your name.

So there you have it. 2006. A really random year. Here's to a happy and memorable 2007!

Mr. Sharp's Quote of the Day

As you all should know, I am a fifth grade teacher. Here is my quote of the day.

Directed to the class.

Mr. Sharp: "Quiet down so I can yell at you."

Wednesday Night Dinners

The Wednesday Night Dinner has been one of the staples to our house. I compare these dinners to the legendary brunches that Al Gore had with Bill Clinton... just because I can. It's our one guaranteed time each week when the three of us meet up, go out to a new restaurant, talk about whatever is going on in our lives, and then make fun of each other until someone storms out crying. That person is always Rohit, but I'll save that for another blog entry.

Similar to most television shows, the weekly dinners kicked off strongly. We tried some really new and good restaurants, had some entertaining guests join us, and came up with some great ideas (the legendary Three Mantras was introduced during a meal). Unfortunately, we couldn't keep up the momentum and soon, the Family dinner nights became the boring, weekly trip to Park Chow. I think this is how the our "good idea percentage" dropped to 10%. Eventually, we just cancelled the dinners and stopped doing them.

Fortunately for you all, the dinner's been revived and as we check out new restaurants, we'll post our reviews here.

This week, we checked out Tikka Masala on 6th/Judah. For a relatively small restaurant, the food was really good and more importantly, relatively inexpensive! It's a good take out place too.
Given all of these factors, my final Rating: Thumbs Up.

Have a good weekend y'all.

Mea Culpa

Normally, I would be the first to assail my dear roommate, Mr. Ng, for his libelous earlier post, but frankly, I have been responsible for quite a few bad ideas in my day. A particularly interesting one, especially from Mr. Ng's perspective, is what I will discuss in this post.

It was October 2006 and my roommates and I had ventured to the local bars to meet up with friends. After some time at the Haight, we moved onto another bar, wherein Garett invited his dear friend, who incidentally happened to have a huge crush on him. I noticed right away that she was giving him more attention than one might a simple friend, and immediately informed him of as much. Now one thing you all must know about Garett is that he is a very modest individual; he hardly ever acknowledges positive aspects about himself, and this situation was no different. He simply refused to accept that his friend might view him as more—much more.

Exercising what I thought to be my one good idea (of 10, or maybe 100), I encouraged Garett to spend more time with his friend. Relunctantly, Garett took my advice and boy, did the sparks fly! I lost track of Garett that night and did not see him again until he wandered in the next morning, still wearing what he had worn the previous night.

Now, you might be thinking this is anything but bad, but I haven't yet finished my story. Whatever happened between Garett and his friend that night—I'm not one to judge—was anything but good. Perhaps there was some temporal value derived from the interaction (if you know what I mean), but what value there had been was quickly squandered when Garett's friend suddenly began calling repeatedly. Apparently, she had mistook an intoxicated blunder for an overture of commitment, and now, Garett, who had subsequently moved on to (or onto?) other, younger women (specifically, the type that frequent Stonestown), was left with the rather unenviable task of extricating himself from a situation gone awry.

The phone calls started on his cell phone, but soon, they were coming in our house line as well (how she got that number, the world will likely never know). To this day, Garett continues to suffer harassment from his former friend and it's all my fault. Who knew one bad idea could have such a long lasting impact. I'm sorry, Garett. I really am.

1 out of 10

There's a general consensus around the house that we come up with 1 good idea out of every 10 that comes out of our mouths. Okay, when I say "we," I really meant myself only. But since there's probably only 2 of you reading this (hello roommates!), I feel empowered to write whatever I want. The best part is I can make any claim I want and since this is the information superhighway, I don't really need to back it up with any actual evidence.

So let me divulge something to you all right now that you didn't know already... Rohit is actually the person who comes up with the bad ideas in our house. I mentioned the 1 out of 10 good ideas figure earlier. That's Rohit. The figure is actually closer to 1 out of 100. You can trust me on that number. I majored in statistics so I know how to count and do that kind of analysis. At any rate, we all knew Rohit was the weakest link. And now you do too.

The idea of coming up with a house blog started about a year ago. We revisited the concept of a communal forum every so often and have even flirted with the idea of doing a podcast or something that would chronicle the random stuff we talk about or have in our heads. But we decided to keep it in blog format for now so all you slackers at work can read this (again, hello roommates!).

I hope you enjoy this. It should make for some interesting reading to say the least.
